My major is cybersecurity; it relates heavily to cybersecurity technology. Cybersecurity protects the data’s assets that belong to or connect to an organization’s network. Cybersecurity’s purpose is to defend against all threats against the network. One role in the cybersecurity field that is my future goal is as an information security analyst. As concerns for cyber attacks started to raise it created the position for information security analysts. As a information security analysts, their purpose is to take certain preventive measures to protect a organizations’ sensitive data. This allows them to stay ahead of hackers who would seek to do the organization’s harm. They perform this job by preventing critical information from being stolen, damaged, or compromised. This position heavily relates to cybersecurity technology because it is the very essence of cybersecurity as it is defined as the technologies, methods, and the practice of designs in order to protect various networks, devices, programs, and data from attack, damage, or unauthorized access. Another major that closely relates to cybersecurity is computer science. Both degrees may require knowledge of computing and networks. However, in most computer science programs, the curriculum focuses on computing and its application. While in cybersecurity programs, the curriculum tends to focus more on security aspects. While computer science is an attractive major option, I chose to go with cybersecurity as it was more in line with what I wanted to do in the future.
I picked this career because my mother has a job in being a penetration tester, and my father works for the navy doing cybersecurity. As a penetration tester, my mother helps businesses and organizations identify and resolve security vulnerabilities and weaknesses that would harm their business’s computer networks. She got her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science while my father got his degree in cybersecurity.
