Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.
Cybersecurity is interdisciplinary in nature, which means that it combines wisdom and experience from many different disciplines to form an inclusive, impactful, and unifying field of study. ODU offers several majors that also relate to cybersecurity. These include majors in Leadership, Psychology, Information Technology (IT) and Engineering. The Leadership major at ODU is a part of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program. This field of study teaches students valuable leadership skills, including: planning, organizing, directing, staffing, reporting, and budgeting. In order to lead, they must be familiar with some aspects of cybersecurity, like determining how much should be devoted to cybersecurity, how to prevent security breaches and what to do when they occur, and how to keep the business running in the event of a catastrophic security breach. Another major that is associated with cybersecurity is Psychology. It is a discipline that studies the human mind and behavior. Some of the psychological factors related to cybersecurity threats include trust, social proof, reciprocation, commitment, authority, and scarcity. All of these psychological factors are being considered when hacking takes place. Additionally, there is the Information Technology (IT) major. This discipline focuses on computer-based information systems found in software applications and computer hardware, which are vulnerable to cyber attacks. IT security specialists are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of these systems and contents. Information security serves to protect the organization’s ability to function, to ensure safety across all applications on an organization’s IT systems, to safeguard the data of an organization, and to secure the IT assets used at the organization. Finally, Engineering is a part of this multi-disciplinary approach to cybersecurity. Engineers use math and science to solve technical problems, and oftentimes their work contributes very significantly to society in terms of infrastructure, societal and consumer needs. There are several types of engineers that are interested in cybersecurity, such as computer engineers, electrical engineers, and systems engineers. For these professionals, it is critical to understand and develop some degree of expertise in cybersecurity because engineering systems and critical infrastructures are under constant threat from cyber attacks. They play an active role in providing solutions to these vulnerabilities by becoming more aware of the increasing sophisticated techniques used to damage systems and steal or manipulate data. These are just some examples of the interdisciplinary aspects of cybersecurity found in other fields of study. The world has become much more information-driven, and this prompts the necessity for a deeper understanding of how we can keep our information safe. Taking all this into account, the fact that these disciplines are vitally and substantially integrated with cybersecurity is very beneficial to society.
