How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims?

The anonymity provided by cyber technology gives offenders a sense of security and freedom to harass others on the internet, any time, anywhere, and without fear of repercussion or retaliation from the victim. Many times, an individual can be harassed for a long period of time, ranging from months to years. This is because it can be difficult to find out who the offender is and hold them accountable, or because the victim is being blackmailed. Essentially, cyber technology has made it much easier for offenders to stalk and harass their victims online without having to confront them in person. Offenders may spread misinformation about the victim through social media and even create fake, unflattering profiles pretending to be the victim. Also, there are instances where a third party is involved in cyber harassment. This occurs when a harasser or stalker enlists the help of another person to deliver a message to the victim on their behalf. If the victim knows who is harassing them, then they can report the situation to the authorities. Depending on the state, the offender can be charged for harassment, which can deter them from harassing others over cyber communications. In addition, cyber technology makes it easier for stalkers/harassers to find information about their victims, and they can use some of this personal information, such as familial/work relationships, to threaten/extort a victim into doing something on their behalf. This could be for monetary gain, or because the offender finds enjoyment in terrorizing people online. If the victim does not know the offender, then the situation becomes much more frightening and intimidating. When the identity of the offender is unknown, then it makes it more difficult for law enforcement to investigate, and for prosecutors to prosecute the crime. Cyber offenders may see this lack of legal protections as an empowering environment, while victims may feel defenseless and constantly threatened. This may lead to victims taking matters into their own hands in the form of vigilante justice, thereby bringing more damage onto society. In conclusion, there must be a revision to the existing cyber stalking and cyber harassment laws resulting in more protection to victims and penalties to offenders.
