Development of Rhetorical Knowlege
I developed rhetorical knowledge by analyzing and drafting a variety of compositions or genres. I learned through writing the Documented Essay and the Who Am I? Essay that different types of works require different writing structures. In the Documented Essay, I was required to conduct formal research and the writing process as well as the structure were rigid. What I mean by this is that the paper followed the standard 5 paragraph essay with a strong thesis and equally strong supporting paragraph along with a conclusion that incorporates everything the essay is about. My tone needed to have proper grammar and solid evidence to support my claims. The Who Am I? Essay on the other hand, I wasn’t required to be formal. I had the freedom to write in any structure I wanted (meaning that I didn’t have to follow the 5 paragraph essay format). Formality was discouraged. I was also given the freedom to use different technologies to reach a less formal audience. I understand through these two assignments that rhetorical situations differ across communities and disciplines. I still believe that I need to grow to be less formal at times because I’ve been so used to writing formally over the years. I can use this skill to adapt to different environments when presenting different subjects.
