Personal information is very sensitive and needs to be secured. Ethical problems can arise with the risk that an individual’s information is not secure and could get accessed by someone who isn’t authorized. The first ethical issue that can arise when electronically storing information about individuals is privacy. It is important that records about individuals remain private and confidential when storing personal information. This would mean only allowing authorized people the ability to see the contents of the individual’s information and everyone else should not have access to that information. The second ethical issue that arises from storing information about individuals electronically is the accuracy and integrity of the data or information. If the information is altered by someone not authorized that presents an ethical problem because now the individual that breached the information has access to it, but also altered official information about another individual. This would result in a loss in the integrity of the stored information. Information’s integrity can also be lost unintentionally through accidental technical and human errors made by authorized people. Availability of electronically stored information about individuals is a third ethical issue that can arise. Availability refers to the ability for authorized individuals to alter and update information in an adequate time frame. The availability of this information by authorized individuals allows for the information to be accurate and up to date which helps with the integrity of the information. If the electronically stored information cannot be accessed by authorized individuals, that would pose an ethical problem because the information would be out of date. The fourth ethical issue that can arise from electronically storing information about individuals is security. It is important to ensure and protect against security breaches and hackers from accessing information that is stored about an individual. If an institution’s security system gets hacked or breached then the information of many people is susceptible to unauthorized access. It is important for institutions to have security to combat this ethical issue.
