Protecting Availability

Availability is about making sure that the information or data in a system is always accessible to authorized users at any time or place. For the system in my publicly-traded company, there are a few protections that could be implemented to ensure availability of the systems. One of the first things to implement is a good firewall system in order to control traffic flow and block unused, risky ports. Another tool that I would implement is antivirus software, in order to prevent any viruses or other malware from infecting any of the company’s devices. One decision that is vital to protecting availability would be the use of backups of company data. In the event of the system’s databases becoming corrupted, deleted, or destroyed backups of the system’s databases would be able to fill in until the main systems can be restored/repaired. There are other ways to protect availability by creating physical protections to the databases. Physical protections could include locks, proper ventilation of the server/database rooms, security guards, etc.
