How do engineers make cyber networks safer?

Cyber networks are always having the risk of hackers exploiting their system. For this reason, it is critical for the system to always improve. Additionally, cyber networks can be disrupted either by natural disasters or malicious online attacks which increases the urgency for engineers to keep these networks safe. Cyber engineers are responsible for constantly improving the cyber networks and keeping users safe. Because cyber engineers are constantly improving cyber networks, they also need to keep monitoring the networks and systems for any suspicious activities that are going on. This calls for a continuous network scan that tries to find vulnerabilities. From there, they can detect threats and understand the vulnerabilities for them to focus on removing. Penetration testing is also conducted on the cyber network to test the security strength of the system. Anything found in the penetration testing that might risk a malicious attack will be worked on by engineers to be fixed. In order to maintain safety in the networks and guarantee the people using it does the same, they would need to develop a set of security practices and standards. This will help educate users on what they should and shouldn’t do and let them know the expectations put onto them when using the network. Another role that engineers have in keeping cyber networks safe is constantly updating, installing, and using software like data encryption programs and firewalls. Doing this ensures that the software security used is up to date and the most advance. In organization and business settings, security engineers would report their findings to higher management and help develop the information security strategy. Furthermore, they would be responsible for spearheading activities related to malicious attack incident response or any network security system failures. They would also delegate additional changes implemented in software, user needs, and hardware. Ultimately, security engineers have a huge role in keeping cyber networks safe through the responsibilities carried out in their work.
