Final Reflection

During the semester the service-learning activity I participated  in was with the Ignite organization. I mentored challenged kids and was able to better enhance my skill with working with younger people. I attended the mentoring sessions during the day from two till four in between classes on Thursday. While participating in the event I dealt with kids who have been through mentally challenging events in their lives already at such a young age so I had to be careful and be cautious about the vulnerabilities. Being able to work with the kids was something I enjoy and am still continuing to do even though I have met my number of hours needed for the assignment.

“The vision of IGNITE is to “IGNITE people’s hearts to change the city.”Ignite Norfolk Is an organization that in my opinion is making a difference in the community. They provide people a lot of opportunities to do something effective in the community through providing food pantries, prayer services, ignite groups and many more other things that can be beneficial to the people of the community. The program is christian church that was founded under Christianity and is their focus is to reach people that may not be reached in society.

After reflecting on your service-learning activity my opinion on being able to make a great impact in my community has changed. Not for the worse but for the better, i have realized that it doesn’t take a lot to make a positive impact on someone. Being able to help the children and getting them to be open with me so that we could all be able to have success in getting an activity done or an assignment. So overall the experience that I have gained through the ignite organization has strengthened my belief that I can help others in the future and be effective.

The health related experience you had prior to the Fall 2019 semester was with my rotc program. I did so by helping run non-profit activities in communities for children and also by cleaning the community with the rotc program I was involved in. It has impacted my desire to pursue a career in dental hygiene because it has shown me that I am very capable of working with children. It proved to me that as long as I continue to approach situations with the belief that I can accomplish something it can be done.

Thinking about the service-learning experience, and community partner the services relate to my intended career field because it consists of me working with children. A Degree Program could it relate to is a Technology Education major. This is due to the fact that also allows for a person to work with children and impact their lives. Although I would not choose to pursue a career as a parallel major because I prefer to do something that has more of an immediate positive impact on someone, it is a good job.

In the beginning of the semester I studied about one six hours a week which was not to my benefit. Because I was not receiving the grades I believed I was supposed to be getting, so I began studying more. I began studying at least twelve hours a week and saw improvement in most of my classes except for a few due to certain reasons. I realized that studying with others is very impactful for me so a change I have made since the beginning of the school in regards to studying is I go to tutoring. During tutoring its normally other students and myself helping each other to better understand subjects. Going over material with other students is helpful because someone will always know something I don’t know and I can also help when I know something the students might not know.

My transition to college was not all that I had initially expected, I expected an easy transition but everything wasn’t all good for me, there was some challenges I had to face while adjusting. A resource or activity you have found helpful this semester is the chemistry tutoring program. Unfortunately I did not come across a program that i did not find useful this semester. Something I wish I knew fourteen weeks ago is that i should have begun studying for chemistry a long time ago. The biggest thing I learned from this semester that I will be taking with me into the next semester is the better study habits that i have learned work best for me, which is group studying.
