Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture
One way I explore cultures is by trying new foods and going to new restaurants. Food is a form of art and expression and a way of living. If I go to a new restaurant to try new foods from a different culture I get to experience the restaurant itself and learn about its traditions and ambiance of it. It is so important to try new things and learn a different way of living because that creates a knowledge of how other people live and allows someone to understand how others live and what they believe.
I do not like chain restaurants because I do not believe they are authentic and sometimes not rightfully accurate. I like to go to small, authentic restaurants that are owned and run by people of that culture. It gives you more of a real experience of how they live and what they eat. In this class we were able to do to talk to someone across the world and learn more about them by speaking spanish to them. In my first talk abroad (linked below is my talk abroad reflection), I was able to learn about my partner and her favorite foods, her family’s favorite foods, her country’s most popular foods, and even more about herself and her family. It was really interesting because I was able to really get a feel for someone who lives a different life outside of the U.S.

Engaging in Communities
It is so important to be involved and give back to your community. It feels so good to give and help others. There is no reason to let people struggle that are living around you each day. Being involved in your community allows you to learn more about others, there cultures, and brings everyone together. When you have a community where everyone knows each other and works together they can make changes in the future for there living environment to make it a better and safer place.
I enjoy giving back to my community. Since I am on the sports team here at ODU we are required to as a team to help out whenever we can. Last semester we were lucky enough to help out the President of ODU by giving back and helping him with his canned food drive. We were able to make over 600 food bags to give to people in need in our community. This was a successful event and we were all happy to help.

Interpersonal Communication
In this class, I really enjoyed the TalkAbroad projects. It was so interesting to speak to others from different countries and cultures. It was also interesting to see how my different partners were significantly different even though they spoke the same language. We also were able to speak to each other as classmates through discussion boards which was also a cool experience.
In this class, we were given assignments on a discussion board. I was able to learn how to form new sentences in Spanish and also learn more about my classmates. The discussion boards and TalkAbroad projects allowed me to better speak Spanish more fluently and better understand what people are saying in Spanish. I have attached a discussion board below where my classmates responded to my post where I say a sentence in Spanish and also talk about my own experience. We learned about Spanish food, our favorite foods, and our classmates favorite foods.

Presentational Speaking
This semester I did a lot of different kinds of presentations. I did an informative presentation where I talked about how remote work affects one’s mental health. My favorite presentation (linked below), I got to analyze my favorite chip and there advertisements. These presentations are a different way to explain the research that I have done. These presentations also help with public speaking. In this Spanish class the Flip Grids were also informative and helped with presentation experience.
In the presentation I have linked below, I had a few challenges. I had prerecorded my presentation but it was not working to fit the submission button for youtube. I had to try many different things for it to work. I then had to delete it and redo it on a different platform for it to work. This took me a lot of time and effort in order to make sure that it was submitted correctly. The presentation itself was smooth and easy to make because I gathered all the information before hand.
Presentational Writing
In my communications class, we did a lot of work on our Wix E-Portfolio pages. We would post a lot of blog posts. These blog posts help us become better writers and also learn a new form of writing. These blog posts are also a useful way to have all of our writings and findings in one place. The link below will have an example of one of my blog posts.
These blog posts helped me further my knowledge of writing and organizing. I was able to gather all my information and put it in these blog posts. These blog posts were great because you can easily share the link to the class discussion boards and then your peers can read and revise them. I was able to become a better writer and have an easy and accessible way to keep all of my blogs together in one.

Interpretive Listening
In this class, we did a discussion board where we were given a video and we had to analyze it and then give our opinions and answer the questions that went along with it. After we answered the discussion post ourselves we had to respond to two classmates. This allows us to read our classmates posts and respond to them and learn new things.
For this discussion board, we watched a youtube video about sports. The video was a little hard to understand because they were talking pretty fast. Since the video gave us a visual of what they were speaking about and went into detail I could pick out the little things that made me understand what they were saying. I overcame this difficulty by rewatching the video to get a full understanding. It was super interesting to see these people having fluent Spanish conversations like it was a normal english conversation.
Interpretive Reading
In my communication class, I was able to analyze a lot of articles for my research. My research was about mental health and how it is affected when working from home. For this research, I had to analyze and use a bunch of different website articles and journal articles to learn more about my topic.
The one article I was able to analyze is one from Forbes. I did not have many challenges with this article because it was in English and also a topic that I could understand and comprehend. My takeaway from this reading was that people do struggle with mental health when working from home. They also explain why people feel this way and the changes that can be made to prevent it.
