Ethical Considerations of CRISPR Gene Editing

Ethical considerations to be brought up are safety and the ethics of how the gene/DNA was obtained (consent). This whole process and topic of gene editing have people on their toes about how safe it is to use it to do things such as storing DNA files on a computer like Microsoft is currently striving to do according to the University of Washington’s article “UW, Microsoft researchers break record for DNA data storage” written by Jennifer Langston. There is really no way of making sure that it is safe to use or to keep safe even if it is sensitive data. The DNA could eventually be copied or stolen for malicious intent and that in itself so could raise some issues in possible crimes. A safety issue involving the computers that hold these DNA samples is keeping the computer itself safe from malicious codes that have been created by converting the base sequences into binary code. This could lead to the computer getting viruses that companies/people might not know how to handle.

A consideration that might not be as considered while reading these articles is the ethics of how DNA is getting collected in the first place. How would one go about going through with this new technology? Are people going to be informed that their DNA is being used? There is not really anything in these articles that could answer these questions but it is something that needs to be looked into.
