Over his 45-year tenure as owner, he implemented policies that promoted equality and challenged discrimination in the league.

One of Davis’ most notable actions was his refusal to allow his white and black players to be separated in hotels during road games. This decision was made in response to the Jim Crow laws of the South that mandated segregation in public spaces. Davis recognized the absurdity and injustice of this practice and stood against it by ensuring that all of his players were treated equally and with respect.

But Davis’ contributions to diversity in the NFL went far beyond hotel policies. He was the first owner to hire an African-American head coach, Art Shell, in 1989. Shell had previously played for the Raiders and had worked his way up through the coaching ranks. Davis recognized Shell’s talent and gave him the opportunity to become the first black head coach in the modern era of the NFL.

Davis also hired Tom Flores, who became the second Latino head coach in the NFL. Flores had played for the Raiders and worked as an assistant coach before being promoted to head coach in 1979. He went on to lead the team to two Super Bowl victories.

In addition to his groundbreaking coaching hires, Davis also hired the first female chief executive officer in the NFL, Amy Trask. Trask began working for the Raiders in 1987 and eventually rose to become one of the most powerful executives in the league. She was instrumental in the team’s success and helped to change the perception of women in professional sports.

Al Davis’ commitment to diversity and civil rights in the NFL was not without controversy. He was known for his confrontational style and his willingness to challenge the league on issues that he believed were unjust. But his actions helped to break down barriers and promote equality in the sport.

Davis’ legacy continues to inspire future generations of NFL owners and players to fight for social justice and equality. His commitment to diversity and inclusion serves as a reminder of the power of sports to bring people together and promote positive change in society.

Al Davis, the former owner of the Oakland Raiders, was a trailblazer in breaking down barriers of diversity and civil rights within the National Football League.
