- Through the course of the semester I have learned much about the Spanish language and culture. I have learned and succeeded with conjugating, learning numbers, objects, family members, and reading. I still struggle though with remembering verbs, speaking, and understanding when being spoken to.
Artifacts
I believe that the artifacts that represent my improvement over the course of the semester is my entrevista interviews. In all of them I have learned how to confidently talk about myself and my family. I have demonstrated my knowledge of telling time and also about my studies at ODU.
Exploring Culture
Some ways that I have learned to appreciate Spanish culture is by learning about the love for soccer that they have. I grew up playing soccer but never knew that people could love a sport so much! I think that it is amazing how a sports team can be such a large and influential part in the lives of a whole country.
Engaging in Communities
As someone who grew up in south Texas and plans on moving back and living there for the majority of my life I think that it is so important for myself to continue on in my Spanish education. Not just knowing numbers and to tell the time, but to continue on to be able to fully communicate and speak to the people around me in my community and to continue growing and appreciating the culture I grew up around.
Interpersonal Communication
My interpersonal communication skills I think are fairly average. I enjoyed the video assignment at the beginning of the semester where we made a video and then peers responded with videos of their own. I liked that style of communication because though we did not know each other it was more personable.
Presentational Speaking
My presentational speaking skills are not really the best yet. I am able to speak well if I can practice and read off what I have written. Yet, I am not that successful at just purely speaking at this point. I know I need to practice to be able to start having more fluent conversation.
Presentational Writing
I believe I struggled the most with my writing skills. On all of the home work where we had to conjugate and write sentences I would not be able to write the sentences as I should have. I also struggled very badly with spelling and knowing where I needed to put accent marks on certain words.
Interpretive Listening
Interpretive listening was a bit of a struggle for me this semester. On the home work activities where we would listen to a paragraph and then answer questions I would not be able to comprehend the words with out seeing them. I was having to go back multiple times to re listen. Listening is a skill that I know I need to work on.
Interpretive Reading
I think that interpretive reading such as on our exams where we would read a short passage and then answer questions would be one of my strong points over the semester. I think this because reading to me is easier because I have time to look at the words and break down the sentences rather than someone speaking when I usually do not understand.
