Food Review

The morning of November 8, 2018, my class and I decided to go Handsome Biscuit located on Monarch Way in Norfolk, VA.  Handsome Biscuit is a little small restaurant brick building with a bright yellow sign that says Handsome Biscuit. To my actual surprised, the restaurant was so small that may be can fit about 25 people pretty small right, for someone who has biscuits out of this world?! I always wanted to try it but never had the chance or time. When I walked into the restaurant the first thing I noticed and grabbed my attention was they made the dough right in front of you. The price actually surprised me I thought it would be out of my price range for a biscuit, but my total was actually $4.49. I never imaged someone having a PB&J on a biscuit something I would never think to have. Why have just a biscuit if you can have hash browns with crisp melted onions or seared greens with garlic and chili flakes. To add on they also have lemon bars, mocha brownies, and biscuit pudding. After 5 minutes I finally decided to have the Shorty Evans.

The staff had magnificent customer service and willing to answer any questions I had about the menu. What I didn’t know is that they dough was with of sweet potatoes. My first thought of that was eww. I knew right then I wouldn’t like it, but I still decided to go with it. I was stuck between ordering the Hella Fitzgerald, a fried chicken with bacon, cheddar, and red eye sausage gravy, and the Shorty Evans, a chicken Sausage, with egg and cheese. I decided to go with the Shorty Evans since that was one of simple things on the menu. I didn’t want to be the typical person that I am I wanted to try something different even through you can never go wrong with chicken or sausage. I thought it would be the superlative choice since I had never been to Handsome Biscuit. After ordering, I found a table to sit at. While waiting for my food, one of my classmates opened the door to the restroom, which caught me by surprise. The restroom was green and had flashing lights, which is different from your normal typical restaurant. To my surprise, they brought my food out to me. I was expecting something like McDonald where they give you a ticket and called out your number. What came out I was not expecting; I was expecting a greasy sausage biscuit. This biscuit looked like it had no favor and dry. Then I have to remember the dough was going to be a yellowish brownish color because of the sweet potatoes. The overall presentation on how it was presented on the plate was marvelous.

To my disappointment, the biscuit was presented wonderfully but the sausage itself wasn’t to my satisfactory. The smell of the biscuit was unpleasing that it made my stomach turn. The look of this biscuit looked hard as a brick. The sausage seemed undone and had a reddish color to it. The sight of the biscuit was dull looking, but I thought it was because I order it without eggs and cheese, which was a bad idea.  For it to be only a biscuit; it was a pleasing size it was bigger than a lot of the biscuits I’ve seen before. The biscuit bread was amazing. It was hard and crumbly. Now, the sausage wasn’t made out of pork; it was made out of chicken. I never had a chicken sausage before, and this wasn’t a good introduction to them It was very displeasing. I didn’t like it one bit. After the first bite I knew that I didn’t find it appealing but I felt like I didn’t give the biscuit a real taste, so I went back for a second bite and nothing changed I still found it horrible. Now if the sausage would’ve been made out of pork along with the amazing biscuit dough, I would’ve had an extraordinary experience with the food I know that the biscuit would had been amazing but being that it was a chicken sausage ruined it for me.

Would I come back again? That is the real question. The answer is no, I would not go back again. My experience with the place was that it was very clean, and they had great costumer service but the food quality to me didn’t match up. If I looked at the menu against and saw something that sounded really appealing to me, I might change my mind. I was thinking about going back and trying a chicken biscuit that they have, but how I feel right now is that I wouldn’t go back again. I would recommend that others should go but, to not get the same biscuit that I got because like I had said before the biscuit that I got was terrible. Although I thought the sausage biscuit was not the best choice, I should’ve gone with my gut and got the Hella Fitzgerald, the fried chicken biscuit, I should’ve been one the typical people that try one of the craziest things on the menu instead of getting the simple option. In conclusion, Handsome Biscuit was a great place with amazing biscuit but the sausage biscuit wasn’t the best, but one day I may try it again.
