On day 2 of #TakingOverJamaica we took a trip to the majestic city of Kingston. First we sat through a lecture/dance tutorial on the UWI Campus. The professor was very knowledgeable about all things Jamaica; so much so that he confirmed everything I read in our Jamaica “textbook.” Two hours later we were back on the bus, on the way to our next destination- the Devon House. While we waited for our tour of the actual house to start, Dr. Key and O’Daine bought us Coconut Water, Jamaican Beef Patties, and Ice Cream- yum! Coincidentally, once we were finished eating the tour guide was prepared to give us the grand tour. The house was huge and the tour was rushed since we were running low on time but, overall, it was a very inspirational tour of Jamaica’s First Black Millionaire’s home.
By name, Bob Marley is a well known Jamaican musician but, he is so much more than that. Before visiting the Bob Marley museum I knew he was an artist that was liked by lots of different types of people, but I never knew why; now I know. Bob was a very kind, woke person who promoted unity and peace. Just from being in his house I felt a very calm and cool presence that I loved. During the tour we were given so much information about him and what he did prior to his untimely death. He was a really great man who did a lot within his community and country. In his music he even embedded inspirational messages for the youth. It’s only my second day in Jamaican and I already feel like I know its history and customs because of all the beautiful knowledge I have been given by multiple people.
