Although we were supposed to be encouraging and helping the girls, we also connected with them. On the first day there was an instant connection between some of the girls and my classmates. Naturally, the more time we spent together the closer we became. I loved being able to be there for them and get to know them, even though it wasn’t a deep connection. There was so much we shared in common with the girls that you wouldn’t have expected like favorite music, foods, and activities. This type of connection was sort of a nice piece of home while being away from home. I think sharing the same interests also made the girls and ourselves feel the slightest bit normal being that we were complete strangers. Along with talking about our social lives, they also shared bits of their story with us. It’s as if our shown care for the girls did not go unnoticed by them. They opened up little by little with the activities we were doing like a question and answer game and a self esteem building activity which caused them to shy away a little at first. One of the girls became eager to answer questions and become friendly competition for the others. Our short time with them has left a lasting impression on me which will not allow me to forget about them or our time together.
