Journal Entry #2

The first major that comes to mind is criminal justice; a major that is offered by ODU. From the Associated Disciplines Page, it states that criminal justice it states the focuses of criminal justice. I mainly want to focus on the prevention strategies and detecting offenses focuses. These two focuses relate to cybersecurity heavily. In CYSE, an information security analyst generally looks at a system and look at a network and scan for any threats (same as detecting offenses for criminal justice). From there, the analysts will then determine how to solve these potential threats (same as creating prevention strategies for criminal justice)

The next major is IT (Information Technology); if you were to think of a family tree, imagine IT being the father of the tree. Without IT there is no Cybersecurity, everything IT covers is substantially covered in Cybersecurity as it is a subset of IT (think of Cybersecurity being a child of IT, it has some features of the father but has its on focus, that focus being the protection of security etc.)

The third is Psychology; “The study of mind and behavior”. Another one of those interdisciplinary studies. Sometimes in cybersecurity, depending on where you are in it there will be certain times where you’ll have to think like a hacker/attacker. You have to think like this to answer questions like “How would a hacker do this?, If I was a hacker what is the first vulnerability I would check for?”. This relates heavily to psychology as you are studying the mind and behavior of a hacker in order to perform a certain task.

Lastly, computer science; the study of computers. One could say that computer science is a subset of computer science. The two really coincide with programming, a computer scientist has to be really proficient in coding/programming. In cybersecurity, you also have to be proficient + be familiar with the network that you are working with.
