Journal Entry #3

One of the major ethical issues of storing information is Privacy and Confidentiality. Most times your information is stored by a company/business/government facility etc. The storing of information is usually agreed upon so that these entities are able to quickly pull your information when needed. The issue arises when the information is viewed by someone who isn’t supposed to view (whether accidental or intentional). Take for example you and someone share the same last name and the wrong file was pulled, you are now viewing someone else’s data when you’re not supposed and that is a risk of privacy and confidentiality.

Another issue is security breaches, almost everything is susceptible to a security breach. Even the most secure networks have possibility of being breached. Most times when a security breach occurs information is leaked and viewed, most times we are unaware of whose data was retrieved. When keeping your information stored there is always the possibility that your information could potentially be intercepted in a data breach. For example, let’s say Nike had encountered for 30 seconds, even though it was only 30 seconds, it is a possibility that 30 seconds worth of data was intercepted and viewed.

The third issue of storing information is system implementation. How a system is created can potentially cause a risk to your information stored. If the system isn’t created correctly, not secure enough or overall doesn’t work correctly then the system is poorly built and could potentially raise an issue with the information stored.

The final issue is Data issues, most times this occurs when data is inaccurately inputted into a system, this now affects the information stored in the system. Take for example your date of birth is 07/07/1993, but in a data system it was inputted as 07/07/1994. If you were trying to retrieve your data and a company wanted to look you up using your date of birth they wouldn’t be able to due to this issue.
