Journal Entry #6

Workplace deviance is defined as doing things in a workplace environment that break the rules/norms of the organization that can affect the organization as a whole as well as other employees. “Common examples include sexual harassment, intimidation, and showing open hostility toward co-workers.” (Contributor, 2020). From these definitions, it seems that most times when workplace deviance occurs the person being defiant is in action/being seen committing such acts. With the introduction of cyber technology, it made it easier to become defiant without actually having to be seen committing the action. The first thing that comes to mind is Twitter, I am sure we are all familiar with the site; one of the most popular social media sites. On this site people share their opinions a lot; all types of opinions positives, negatives, frustrations and etc. Due to this, an employee can easily share their opinions of their organization on Twitter behind anonymous accounts or even their own personal accounts, with the chances of them getting caught is low. The cyber-world is so vast to the point where people talk negatively about their company and face little to no consequences.

Another example that comes to mind kind of ties with the A in the CIA Triad. Let’s say an employee has access to specific responsibilities within a workplace environment (such as turning lights on within the system, or auto-unlocking all doors after the opening of business). If the employee is angered with their employer/organization they can act in a way that doesn’t have these available when it is supposed to. The worker is using Cyber technology to assist in their workplace defiance.

Although cyber technology has helped us a lot in this world, it still comes with its negatives. One of those negatives includes assisting in workplace defiance. One could say that cyber technology is a double-edged sword.
