Journal Entry #12

Technology is a great thing; it has revolutionized our world in ways that we could never understand. Of course, with all great things, there are negatives. The internet is a place where crime can thrive; the reason for this is that offenders attack victims. Offenders are able to hide under aliases to do whatever illegal they plan on doing.

The first thing that comes to mind is Cyberbullying, this is like bullying but over the internet. Cyberbullying is so popular because people will say and comment nasty things about others and most of the time they are hiding behind fake accounts. Due to this, most times offenders will not get caught, and victims are forced to deal with the bullying; depending on the victim, cyberbullying can to depression, anxiety, or even in some cases, suicide. Cyberbullying is most common on apps like Twitter and TikTok.

Due to technology, scamming and fraudulent behavior through the internet is also common thing. Fake emails, websites, ads, etc., are ways offenders can steal information from victims. Phishing is the act of acting like legitimate sources through email to “catch their bait.” Phishing emails usually contain fake links or fake logins. Most times, once the links are pressed, the victim has already lost their sensitive information.

At gas stations, it has been a common reoccurrence where offenders will use fake card readers when a victim is making a purchase to steal their card information. This crime has caused lots of controversies because in some of these cases, it was the owner of the stores using these readers.

Even with all the good, it is unfortunate that with the rise of cyber technology, there has been an increase in crime over the internet and an increase in the misuse of cyber technology. This is why as individuals, we need to be aware of the risks of cyber technology so that we may be able to protect ourselves.
