Reflection Instructions
For this assignment, please reflect on the Fall 2023 semester, and your experience as a whole. For each question, please provide a few thoughtful, well constructed sentences.
Your First Semester
- Tell us how you have grown from the beginning of the semester to now.
I have learned that college is way different than high school that is for sure. I don’t have everything figured out but I do feel more confident in class and during tests and quizzes.I have also made really good friends that have been with me throughout my ups and downs.
- What were your expectations for this year? Did this semester’s experiences meet your expectations? Explain.
I was expecting to make all A’s that didn’t happen but that is ok. I just realized too late this semester that I am going to have to bust my butt to be able to keep that high of grades. I still have high averages for all of my classes except for bio and that is a C which I don’t think is too bad. With my new understanding of college, yes I do think that I am meeting my expectations.
- What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?
I wish I knew how to study from the start. Don’t goof around because it is so hard to come back from a couple of bad tests or quizzes. It’s ok to do badly on a test every once and a while because everyone isn’t perfect. One test is not going to kill you and your GPA.
Study Habits
- How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?
The only class that I really started studying more for was bio because I am struggling with remembering all the information that was being thrown at me all at once. Exercise science I would study for a couple of hours for that to make sure I understood everything. Math I would do a brief skim through to make sure I know how to solve the problems without struggling.
- How have your study habits changed?
I have learned that I actually need to study for once. I didn’t really study in high school so I had to learn what techniques worked for me the best for understanding new information for tests and quizzes. I like using flashcards a lot and that has helped me a lot with my memorization skills.
- Tell us about a resource that you have used/learned about this semester that will assist you next semester.
I have always had a love for quizlet that has always helped me especially with the fake test that it will make with the information you have given it. Also a new app called gizmo that helps me remember definitions by making me type the answer in via fill in the blank.
- What study habits/techniques will you use going into next semester?
The same techniques that I was using in the later half of the semester: gizmo and quizlet. They are really good apps to use. They are really good for people to use if they have a hard time memorizing things for tests.
Health Professions Learning Community
- This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
- On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected; however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which these courses are tied together.
The only class that I was a part of that was stated above was HLTH 101. That class was great and I had an amazing time learning new information. I did realize that the speakers for this class and HLTH 101 overlapped the whole entire time so I would get the double presentation from the same speaker or close to the same presentation.
Parallel Plan
- This semester we had presentations from different majors in the College of Health Sciences as well as from different majors on campus. This was to give you an idea for possible parallel majors to your current intended major.
- Which two other majors would you be most interested in? Why?
Athletic training would be my first one because I have always liked the idea of working with a football team and being the first responder to an injured player on the field. My second choice would have to be recreational therapy. I have never really understood what they did until now and I just love the idea of working with kids and making sure they are having a fun time playing games like any other kids would.
- What benefit is there to having a parallel plan (or two) in place?
It’s always good to have two options when it comes to things like this. You might be struggling in a course and can’t pass it so you can switch to the other major in hope you only need one of that class instead of two. It’s ok to switch plans, life is not perfect so no matter how much you plan ahead it’s not going to be perfect.
- How could one or both of these two majors benefit your current intended major?
Athletic training is really good because physical therapy has the same classes but you just have to take some extra classes. So if physical therapy doesn’t work then I can lean on athletic training because I wouldn’t have to worry about taking so many extra classes for no reason. I know rec therapy would look good for a minor to help me get into either grad program. You want to stand out from people that are trying to get into the same program as you. I definitely think that both of my major options for backup will be very beneficial.
