For each assignment that we had in LingroHub for exploring culture, I learned about the similarities and differences that we have in the United States to Spanish-speaking countries on topics like clothes, ecotourism, technology, art, and the reinterpretation of history. In addition, talking to someone from a Spanish-speaking country using TalkAbroad taught me how the topics above were used in their country, which was educational and interesting.

LingroHub and TalkAbroad helped me better understand the values and attitudes in the Hispanic culture compared to my own. I learned how they value their country’s history as we do and how they focus more on their art compared to us. These practices challenged my worldview because it’s easy to get caught up in your own world, but when you start talking to people from different countries, you learn more about their perspectives of the world and begin to realize how big the world is. One misconception I had about other countries was that we are all very different, but this Semester I learned that we all have similarities. During my TalkAbroad conversation with Nalley, we talked about places we wanted to travel to, and we both had similar answers. Exploring different cultures is important because it heightens your knowledge about other countries and your own.

This is an example of one of the Exploración Cultural assignments, where I investigated popular art and artist in Argentina.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in my immediate community (my classmates) and global community (TalkAbroad) is important and valuable because you learn more about people through Spanish, which has helped me speak Spanish.

Every day in class, we did group work where we would talk to our classmates in Spanish. I participated in every class and learned a lot about the people around me. It was very beneficial for me to come to class and be surrounded by my immediate community because it kept me engaged in Spanish and made me want to learn more.

Above is an activity we did in class where we worked together as a class to have conversations in Spanish.

Interpersonal Communication

TalkAbroad is a great tool to help you strengthen your Spanish-speaking skills. Although it is a little nerve-wracking when you first do it, every TalkAbroad conversation has benefited me in learning Spanish. You learn about the Spanish speaker’s culture, new words, and get the chance to practice your Spanish. As a result, it has helped me become more confident in my Spanish.

In Spanish 201, I had a few interpersonal conversations in Spanish with my classmates during class through the activities we had to do for our participation. These conversations were beneficial because they helped prepare me for TalkAbroad. The telecollaborative conversations I had in Spanish were through TalkAbroad. TalkAbroad was interesting this Semester because it challenged me compared to the past TalkAbroads I did. The topics we talked about were a bit more challenging and required more time out of class to prepare for them. We talked about our favorite places to travel, art, and reinterpreting history. I thought the first conversation would be easy, but my mind went blank once we began. I knew that for my next TalkAbroad, I would have to be more prepared, which helped me grow in my Spanish. Even though the second conversation was more difficult, in my opinion, compared to the first one, because of my lack of knowledge of art and history, I was able to prepare more, and I finished the conversation strong. Overall, I think TalkAbroad was very beneficial in my interpersonal communication this Semester because it helped me talk in Spanish more.

SPAN-201-TalkAbroad-2-Workbook

Above is the TalkAbroad Workbook for my second conversation with Trinidad. I wanted to add the audio of the conversation, but unfortunately, it wouldn’t work.

Presentational Speaking

We had a few presentational speaking activities this Semester. Some were group work, and some were projects. We had to make a video for the ecotourism unit, which was my favorite project we did this Semester. Below is the link to the video of my ecotourism video.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1492vPJRqwK5nIeQMfKEIsbUAPTsF6Sbu/view?usp=sharing

I have had to do two presentations for this class. One was the video above, and the other was a group project we did in class. For me, pronunciation is always a problem when I’m speaking Spanish because I want to say it how I see it. Words that I struggled to say in my presentations, I would have to repeat over and over again until I could get them right. I excelled in my creativity with my projects, but next time I think I will be sure to practice what I’m saying before I present.

Presentational Writing

I made a few compositions for this course. One is a guide for fashion for my client Raquel, and the other is a story about history. Below is my composition of La Guía de Estilo.

La-guia-de-estilo_Womack

I have grown with each presentational writing project because we had to do it on the spot in class. I’m used to working on the projects at home and then turning them in, but we had to do it in class without notes. This helped me think on the spot and strengthened my Spanish because it required me to memorize vocabulary and grammar. Grammar was a huge struggle for me this semester because it was all very confusing to me, especially preterite and imperfect, so I had to work extra hard to ensure I was using the right form for the verbs in my writing. In the future, I want to spend more time on my writing and better understand Spanish vocabulary and grammar, so I can do better on my writing in the future.

Interpretive Listening

There were a lot of activities where we had to listen to Spanish on Lingrohub. Most activities where we had to submit something in Lingrohub required a listening activity. These activities helped me understand more Spanish and required me to use my brain to get the right answer.

Above is a listening activity where we had to listen to Ramón narrate his experience about emigrating from Cuba to the United States, and we had to use new vocabulary to fill in the blanks.

We listened to a lot of listening activities over the Semester. Whether that was through stories like El eclipse, Finita la Gringa, or other listening activities, there was always a chance to listen to Spanish. Listening to Spanish can always be complicated because I’m required to listen to it several times before I can actually understand what is being told. Listening to Spanish helped me learn how to pronounce words in Spanish and helped me understand Spanish better altogether. I grew through each activity by better understanding the audio each time I practiced listening to Spanish.

Interpretive Reading

We read a lot of Spanish this Semester. Lingrohub provided all of the reading we did this Semester in Spanish, which helped with all of the reading work we had to do.

Above is information about one of the stories we read for this Semester called “El eclipse.”

       “Home.” LingroLearning, https://lingrolearning.com/.

A lot of the Spanish we read was through stories like El eclipse and Finita la Gringa.
