Cyber technology has impacted the world with different ways to communicate, study, work, and interact with one another. Never before has it been easier to keep in contact with anyone, even from across the globe. As cyber technologies have brought much connection and have created countless communities, the medium has also given bad actors new opportunities unlike ever before. Cyber technology impacts interactions between offenders and victims in a completely different way when compared to other traditional crimes. No longer are offenders constrained on physical structures such as walls, fences, rivers, mountains, land, and water, but can accessibly commit crimes through networks and computers. The impact between offenders and victims can be viewed as an unseen threat till the moment it touches the victim. The opportunity for offenders to remain anonymous in committing online crimes has been seen as an incentive as these types of crimes are difficult to prosecute. With the lack of accountability and the easy access to utilize the internet, cyber-crimes are continually running rampant. Victims of these crimes are usually small to medium organizations as they are seen as “low-hanging fruit” since many lack the necessary resources to secure their business’ infrastructure. Financial motivation is the biggest incentive for these offenders, as they steal thousands of dollars using ransomware. The impacts of these crimes are devastating on victims. It leaves many defeated, violated, and left in despair. In this digital age, traditional crimes are somewhat a thing of the past, as cybercrime is not only more accessible to commit, but also more manageable to get away with as well. As this unseen threat is looming, the general public seems to be ignorantly unconcerned. Cyber technology has given many convinces, but the lack of robust security, however, is an aspect many people do not realize, thus making them even more of an easy low-hanging fruit for offenders to pick at. Traditional crime has been falling while cybercrime is spiking. It’s clear that crime has not fallen, but has changed its landscape as it is being implemented into the digital whelm at unprecedented speeds.
