When it comes to committing crimes, there are many motivations an individual may have behind committing an offense. The top seven motives why an individual commits cybercrimes are entertainment, political intentions, revenge, boredom, recognition, money, and multiple reasons.

To rank the motives from 1 to 7, from the one that makes the most sense (1) to the least senses (7), I would have to start backward with…

7. Boredom. I can understand why this might be a motivation, however, I believe it’s an excuse for hiding the true underlying motive.

6. Entertainment. This motive correlates with boredom. When an individual is bored, they find ways of entertaining themselves.

5. Political Intentions. This motivation can make an individual feel justified in their actions. They target individuals or organizations they feel have power and are misusing it. This motivation can make an individual feel like they are fighting the good fight.

4. Revenge. This motivation is another reason why an individual can feel justified in their actions. This motive can be seen in relationships or disgruntled employees.

3. Recognition. Individuals with this motivation want to feel a sense of ultra-ego. They want others to preconceive them in a certain light.

2. Money. This motivation in my mind is the number one reason individuals commit cybercrimes, however, number 1 goes to…

  1. Multiple reasons. I do not think it is one clear motive for why individuals commit cybercrimes. I believe most individuals have a mix of different motivations that drive those illegal actions to take place.
