How to spot a fake website?

Spotting a fake website can be tricky in this day in age where creating a legitimate-looking website is not as difficult as it once was. However, they are certain things to stay diligent about when surfing the web.

  1. Always look at the URL and analyze it for any misspellings or anything that might seem off (for example, URLs being usually long). Also, you can go to who.is and enter the domain URL name to search for registrar data to collect more information.
  2. Make sure your connection is encrypted by having a padlock and https// in the address bar. This does not mean the site is not fake, however, it means that your data is more secure by being encrypted.
  3. And overall, analyze the look of the website. Google search images on the site to see if those photos are elsewhere on the internet. If they are on other sites, such as a stock photo site, this is a good indicator that the site is not legitimate
