How do you think the media influences our understanding of cybersecurity?

The media has a direct influence on how society views cybersecurity. As cybersecurity can be an abstract concept to the average individual, it can be challenging to collect self-evidence to conceptualize one’s reality of security online. Media can provide a perception that can generate awareness for such issues as cybersecurity. As media outlets may claim their number one value is to inform and educate the public about current events, they also need to be properly franchised to run their operations. As technology has advanced and social media has grown, fewer and fewer individuals receive their news through traditional news outlets. To stay afloat, media organizations have techniques and tactics to keep the viewer’s attention. Medias’ presentation of news might hold truths and relevancy; however, it is the way information is presented that could change the impact of the information and could be received differently than intended. This could be said for how cybersecurity is presented to the public. Are media outlets creating fearmongering around cybersecurity or are their alarms valid? Or is there accuracy in both proclamations?

Media and cybersecurity are interrelated as they influence the way users view security online. Media attempts to inform about cybersecurity and its important relevance in keeping our modern infrastructures intact. Society has a different perceptive than ever before in history -the digital lenses by which we view the modern world that our present-day civilization thrives.
