Exploring Culture

The cultural sections throughout the Lingo Learning modules helped me learn about different cultural perspectives around the world. Although I have traveled extensively around the globe, I missed the opportunity to experience Spanish speaking countries.

The lessons in Lingo Learning opened my eyes to the way Spanish speaking countries view several things, from the LGBTQ community and how countries acknowledge them to the stereotypes associated with career opportunities for men and women. It was interesting to read about the sports preferences around the word. I have no real opinion on these lessons, as I’ve been a sponge to all of them and enjoyed reading.

Engaging in Communities

There is true value in having the ability to communicate across cultures and the population. It opens up the opportunity to learn from others and allows you to do the same. Having an understanding of other languages makes it easier to navigate through other countries and connect to that population. For example, I want to work with children in the field of Recreational Therapy. Being able to understand Spanish-speaking children will help make them comfortable with me and give me an opportunity to help more.

Interpersonal Communication

My first Talkabroad conversation was a nerve-wracking experience! Speaking to a complete stranger from Mexico and not knowing what I would be graded on caused a bit of anxiety. Once I met the speaker, however, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I feared! It was neat to hear about her interests and, although I wasn’t confident in my speaking abilities, it was a good conversation.

For my second Talkabroad conversation, I chose a speaker from one of my native countries, Ecuador. Speaking about her experience of being raised and living in the same country her entire life was neat; I’ve traveled to many countries but missed out on the South American experience. I felt more confident during our conversation, having a better grasp on the content we discussed.

Presentational Speaking

The closest thing I came to presentational speaking this semester was my Flipgrid presentation. Let’s just say that I will do better in the future!

Presentational Writing

I did not complete any presentational pieces this semester that relates to my Spanish learning.

Interpretive Listening

I completed several short listening activities in the Lingo Learning modules during this semester.

Interpretive Reading

Much of the readings we had were explorations into the different cultures around the Spanish speaking world. While I didn’t have difficulty with these, I found the conjugation of verb tenses to be my biggest challenge. I am easily confused with the tenses and hope that with more use, I’ll improve over time.
