Security engineers test and analyze networks, computer systems, and security software to ensure that they are secure. They try to anticipate any issues that may arise ahead of time and stop it before it happens or at least be prepared to minimize the affects of a breach. They also help educate employees to help minimize threats and breaches by raising awareness and showing them how they can help prevent threats. They do this by creating a set of security standards and practices for employees to follow. They can conduct penetration testing to find vulnerabilities so they can be corrected before a problem occurs. They continually monitor the networks for security breaches. They install firewalls or may even use a VPN to secure their network through encryption. They can use an intrusion detection system to monitor malicious activities and policy violations, these are different from a firewall as they can monitor inside and outside the network simultaneously. Engineers are constantly monitoring networks for breaches and looking for ways to keep the network safe or providing recommendations to keep the security up to date.
