During Fall 2022, I started my journey with Housing and Residence Life, stepping into the role of a Resident Assistant (RA) on campus. In my initial year as an RA, I had the honor of serving as the Pre-Health Professions RA at the newly established Owens House. Although I’ve shifted my academic focus away from the “Pre-Health” path, I have completed most of the core STEM courses that my residents are undertaking. Using my previous experience, I offer insights to my residents on optimal class schedules and occasionally provide group tutoring when my schedule permits. The image below captures the first day of move-in during the Fall 2022 semester, featuring my fellow Co-RAs, Miles King and Abi Pierce.
As I reflect on my tenure as a Resident Assistant (RA), I’m filled with a sense of growth and accomplishment. Serving in this role has been an enriching journey, allowing me to evolve both personally and professionally. From the initial moments of guiding residents through their transitions to campus life, organizing engaging events, fostering a supportive community, to being a pillar of assistance during challenging times, has been invaluable. As an RA, I’ve honed my leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. The role taught me the significance of empathy and patience in understanding diverse perspectives, navigating conflicts, and creating inclusive environments. My time as an RA has not only shaped my interpersonal skills but also equipped me with invaluable life lessons, preparing me for future endeavors with confidence and a deep appreciation for fostering positive connections within a community.
