Ever since taking on the role of Resident Assistant (RA), I’ve actively engaged in numerous volunteer events on our campus. As an RA at Owens, most of my volunteer work has been centered within the building, particularly collaborating with various organizations to organize events, often held in the spacious fishbowl on the first floor. In the image below, my coworkers John Peck, Nick Myers, and I are seen distributing beverages during an event organized by ODU PD last semester
Volunteering as a Resident Assistant (RA) has been an fulfilling experience, allowing me to provide service and leadership within the university community. As a volunteer, my commitment went beyond fulfilling duties; it was a dedication creating a supportive and inclusive environment for my fellow residents. I’ve taken the responsibility of guiding new students through their collegiate journey, aiding them in adapting to campus life, and providing a sense of belonging. My volunteer work as an RA allowed me to learn essential skills like effective communication, problem-solving, and empathy, vital not just in this role, but in all facets of life. It’s been a privilege to offer assistance, support, and guidance to residents, witnessing their growth, and being a catalyst in their academic and personal development. This volunteering experience has shaped my outlook, emphasizing the value of community-building and servant leadership, leaving a mark on my commitment to making a positive impact wherever I go.
