{"id":460,"date":"2019-10-31T15:04:25","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T15:04:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/mulhollandLab\/?page_id=460"},"modified":"2025-08-22T13:32:54","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T17:32:54","slug":"lafayette-river-monitoring","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/mulhollandLab\/lafayette-river-monitoring\/","title":{"rendered":"Lafayette River Water Monitoring"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The goal of this project is to examine the dynamics of <em>Margalefidinium polykrikoides<\/em> (formerly <em>Cochlodinium polykrikoides<\/em>) blooms in the Lafayette River, a sub-tributary of the lower Chesapeake Bay and to establish relationships between surface water chlorophyll concentrations and dinoflagellate abundance throughout the water column.\u00a0 <em>M. polykrikoides<\/em> blooms nearly annually in the late summer in the lower James River where it can cause severe water quality impairments.\u00a0 Complicating bloom detection is the behavior of these mixotrophic dinoflagellates; in addition to their distribution being patchy in surface waters, they also undertake daily vertical migrations.\u00a0 Cells migrate into bottom waters at night, possibly to acquire nutrients, and return to the surface during the day, possibly to acquire light for photosynthesis.\u00a0 The motivation for this study is to better understand these vertical migrations in order to develop a better assessment tool to evaluate water quality impairments in the Lower James River watershed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.odu.edu\/article\/evelyn-page-jmu-student-interned-at-odu\">https:\/\/www.odu.edu\/article\/evelyn-page-jmu-student-interned-at-odu<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.odu.edu\/sci\/article\/summer-intern-spotlight-norfolk-state-university-students-collaborate-environmental\">https:\/\/www.odu.edu\/sci\/article\/summer-intern-spotlight-norfolk-state-university-students-collaborate-environmental<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Submarine groundwater discharge as a major nutrient source in river-fed vs. tidally dominated estuaries<br>Stephanie J.
