Journal #2

The four Majors I picked from ODU that I believe are related to Cybersecurity are Cybercrime, Information System Technology, Criminal Justice, and Computer Engineering. This is how there related.

I’ll start with Cybercrime since it is my major, in Cybercrime, we focus on local and state problems and deal with more personal family matters when it comes to surfing the web. Jobs include digital forensics, system analysis, and others. We identify, protect, detect, and recover your data if and when you are facing a cyber attack from a hacker or a virus. Cybercrime and cybersecurity are related in a way of protecting data. Cybersecurity focuses more on government and business matters while cybercrime focuses on local and families who serf the web, more personal information.

Next is the Criminal Justice major which I’m also taking, in order to understand the legalities of things we first must know the law. If I wanted to become a digital investigator after finishing my major, I can be hired by the police force. Knowing the law will be important for Cybersecurity. They deal with more government and business matters. There could be a disgruntled employee who might commit a white-collar crime and police digital investigators will get involved. Know this is just an example but shows how studying and taking a criminal justice major is good and relates to cybersecurity.

Computer Engineering major is next on the list. Engineers protect sensitive data against a broad variety of threats by applying their skills in areas like machine learning, modeling, systems architecture, and reverse engineering. Computer Engineers play a vital role in building a more secure future for technologies and this is why this major relates to Cybersecurity.

Lastly is Information System and Technology major which I am minoring in but it’s offered at ODU as something you can major in. Information technology is protecting data and information systems from unauthorized access, while cybersecurity deals with protecting data from internet hackers. IT security is a process that covers how companies’ data is handled daily. While cybersecurity can be viewed as a sub-part of IT, ultimately both focus on data protection. Both cybersecurity and IT people need to be aware of the shared mission to secure your data at home or your business.
