Cybersecurity isn’t something I imagined social sciences to be heavily involved with when I selected the course. However, after learning more about it, there are factors to it that I find interesting.

The philosophy of Parsimony is something that I believe many businesses could use to their benefit, which is the simplification of explanations. For a field such as cybersecurity, shortening the time needed to get information across is extremely effective.

The term ‘Psyber Security’, which revolves around the study of psychological influences behind cyber-crime, is also something that interests me. Many assume hackers are often in it solely for the money, but there are other influences that may attribute to poor choices being made. Outside influences such as that interest me, as I took a criminology class last semester that helped explain some behaviors.

Victim precipitation is also a matter that I consider of great importance. While I do believe that victims of cyber-crime cannot be blamed, there is definitely a degree of caution that should be expected from anyone browsing online. It is also something that I consider to be extremely preventable with the proper education, and I often worry about whether or not some of my relatives may fall for scams, as they are not too versed with technology.

Honeypots are also intriguing. It can function as a tool to distract threat-actors from genuine systems and can also detect whenever a system may be accessed without authorization. It offers a way to study how hackers think and the method of attack, so that is another thing I wish to learn more about during my time in this class.

Lastly, learning about the economics behind cybersecurity is somewhat a topic I may find interest in later on, but not currently. I am aware that cyberattacks can cost upwards of a billion dollars in damage, but I do not know anything more specific. Anything that I’m currently unaware of is something I likely wouldn’t mind learning in the future.
