Feminist Theory is one that has become more popular, yet still often has a very negative connotation. While not focused entirely on the female perspective, people often view the theory, along with the feminist movement in general, as something that is derogatory for men. If one were to concern themselves with having accurate information, they would know that feminist theory is not simply concerned with the female perspective. Feminist Theory is concerned with looking at how literature either empowers or subverts traditional gender roles and norms. For women, there are many gender norms that impede them socially and economically. In terms of being a stay at home mother, in many cultures, moms are still expected to do this, while the fathers are expected to provide financially. Even today, the patriarchy still causes problems in our society. These gender norms affect men and women negatively, and feminist theory works to prove that. Gender is still considered to be such a binary, and feminist theory tries to show where the lines blur a little bit. Since there is really no entirely masculine male or feminine female, it is important to acknowledge things like that in literature.
Christine Delphy, a feminist theorist, ties Marxism into the theory. She represents the tradition family unit as an economic unit. In general, although some women work a standard work week, just as the male in the family, they then go home and work additional, unpaid hours as they cook dinner, keep the house, and take care of the children. She considers the entire relationship between male and female to be an economic battle.
