Educate Legislature
Our legal system is having a difficult time responding to cyber incidents, in part to a lack of knowledge. White-collar crimes go severely unpunished. Many of the people in our legal system are just simply unaware of technology and some of the potential cyber issues that arise from it. A lack of laws is part of the reason. It is crucial that we educate lawmakers and law enforcers on cybercrimes and the harm that may arise from them. By bringing the problem to light we can speed up the process of combating it. Educating jurors who also be beneficial. In many instances, jurors are uneducated in cyber security so attempting to explain a case and the supporting evidence may be very difficult. Having someone present who can simply and properly explain certain terms that improve incarceration rates as well.
Protect Our Citizens
One of the more common issues is the hacking and cyber attacks that occur on American citizens from foreign aggressors. I believe that the US must improve its means of protecting us from these aggressors. One way is to be more aggressive in finding these criminals and bringing them to justice. Making the punishment severe. If the US were to make punishment certain and severe on foreign hackers, then that would improve our ability to defend against cybercrimes.
Conclusion
The first step in improving our legal system is simply by educating them. Many of the individuals in our legal system are older and are less knowledgeable in technology and cyber security. Having specific judges who are better educated in this area will improve our ability to incarcerate. Another way is to improve our cyber defenses from foreign attackers. The U.S. needs to do better at protecting its citizens from these attackers and provide aid if they become subject to an attack. They should also be more proactive in tracking and bringing these attackers to justice. Technology has advanced over the years and the criminals along with, so our laws need to advance too.
