Write-Up – SCADA Systems

Vulnerabilities

There are three types of vulnerabilities associated with critical infrastructure systems: natural, human, and accidental or technical. Nature vulnerabilities refer to earthquakes, tsunamis, weather, etc. these are things that we cannot control. Human vulnerabilities refer to cyber hacking, tampering, theft, etc. Accidental or technical refers to power grid failures, water main failures, and safety system failures. These vulnerabilities can create critical problems in our everyday life, which is why we must ensure that these systems are monitored and properly maintained.

SCADA

Supervisory control and data acquisition refer to industrial control systems used to control infrastructure processes, facility-based processes, or industrial processes. These systems are crucial to everyday life and if any of them were to be compromised, there would be serious repercussions. The purpose of SCADA systems is to help operators access actionable data and manage equipment without having to visit the sites. By simplifying the information operators are capable of monitoring crucial systems faster and more efficiently.

Conclusion

SCADA systems have become essential to monitoring and maintaining our vulnerable infrastructure. By implementing these systems, we provide a faster and more efficient means for operators to access actionable data. By doing so we can quickly resolve problems that may arise from vulnerabilities such as nature, human, and or accidental/technical threats.
