1.     What is design thinking?

Encourages individuals to explore new means of problem solving. It focuses on the needs of the user and understanding both context and the culture involved. It revolves around Direct observation and qualitative data gathering to produce new and creative solutions that may have not been available beforehand. It uses a combination of art or human aspect and the science or technological aspect. Together using both of these ideologies we can create new innovative ideas or products.

2.     How has design thinking influenced a product I use?

An example of design thinking in a product I use is Netflix. Netflix created a new way to consume entertainment such as shows and movies from the comfort of our homes. DVDs were quickly becoming outdated, and Netflix capitalized on that by creating their streaming platform which eliminated the need for DVDs. They combined the human aspect and the technology to design a new means of consuming entertainment. Their ability to use direct observation on trends and collect qualitative data from customers has allowed them to continuously grow into a massive business.

3.     What are the connections between opportunities and planning?

In order to run a successful business or launch a new innovation you have to consider a lot of varying factors beforehand. This is why ensuring that a considerate amount of time is done into planning and preparation to ensure that things are operating smoothly and efficiently. Opportunities occurs when factors are met such as target audience, distribution, resources obtained, etc. all of this can and is often achieved from planning. By having a solid plan and acting on it you then capitalize on opportunities in the market.

4.     What opportunities have I missed?

From an academic perspective I probably missed the opportunity to build more business relationships. The university is constantly giving students opportunities to meet with potential employers or listen to guests from our fields. I should have taken the opportunity to attend some of these events to gain a better understanding of what to expect when I reach the workforce. By attending some of these meeting I may have been bale to achieve business connections that could have greatly benefited me in the future. I could have also made an effort to join the cyber security club, which also would have helped me make new relationships that could have helped me with future opportunities.

5.     Can a successful venture be unethical?

Yes, I think we see it often in today’s business landscape. For example, many businesses practiced the idea of data mining customers information. Until recently, businesses would secretly mine customer information/data in order to better their business/marketing practices and after they obtained the desired information, they then sold the information to the highest bidder. This is unethical because they are violating the privacy of their customers and allowing complete strangers to have access to their private information without consent. Businesses have been caught lying to customers for years now just to make a quick buck. Companies have quotas to meet and are solely concerned with profit/bottom lines. They will do anything to ensure that they maximize their profits even if it means compromising ethical practices/beliefs.
