Assignment Takeaway

Assignment Takeaway 5:

During assignment five, we had to describe five nice things we did for strangers over a week. We then discussed how the strangers reacted as well as how it made us feel. At the end of the week, we had to decide if this was something we would continue doing. Like I said in my assignment, I enjoyed seeing the reaction of the stranger and would like to keep this in my usual routine if possible. From this assignment I learned the impact that a small gesture could have on someone’s day. Overall, I enjoyed doing this assignment because it felt good to brighten someone’s day, even though I didn’t know them.

This picture is an example of tutoring. For one of my acts of kindness, I chose to help someone in my chemistry class that I knew was struggling to learn the material.

Assignment Takeaway 4:

Our last assignment was on the Style of Love quiz and they types of relationships that you could have. After I took the quiz, I got that my relationship was high in eros and agape. These results mean that my relationship had an early emotional connection and is a non demanding relationship. This assignment is relevant to me because it showed me what kind of relationship I have with my boyfriend of a year and a half. This assignment also made me reflect on whether or not my relationship has changed over time.

This picture displays the six different love styles based on the quiz. My results included a high amount of eros and agape, and average amount of storge, and low amounts of mania, pragma, and ludus.

Assignment Takeaway 3:

During this assignment, we discussed whether or not Michael Richards was racist or just angry. In my paper, I discussed how I believed that his performance revealed a racist side of him the public was unaware of. I also discussed how there are very few time when saying something racist can be taken in an unoffensive way. I relate to this topic because I didn’t grow up in a very diverse community. Even with that I have always known what was right and wrong and whats racist or not. This topic is relevant to me because beginning school here at ODU exposed me to many new cultures. Even though there were a lot of things I needed to learn about different people and their culture, I knew that there were some things that you don’t say to people.

As you can tell from the above images, I was exposed to much more culture once I started going to ODU. Even though I did not grow up in a super diverse place, I know what you should and shouldn’t say regarding racial slurs.

Assignment Takeaway 1:

During this assignment, I learned the differences between representative, availability, anchor and adjustment, and status quo heuristics. In representative heuristic, you make an assumption about a person or thing based on a prototype you have. In availability, you make your decision based on recent events that have occurred and how they relate to your situation. In anchor and adjustment, you start with a starting point and adjust it when you need to. Finally, status quo heuristic is when you make decisions based on what you are used to or comfortable with.

Overall, I learned that we use these heuristics everyday without realizing that we are doing so. I also learned that in some situations, the decision you make based on the heuristic is not always the best option for you.
