Weekly Blog 1:
The information I learn during this course will help me understand why people behave the way that they do. I am hoping to expand my knowledge on human behavior and what triggers certain behaviors. With this being my first online course, I am hoping that I can improve my organizational skills when it comes to due dates and assignments as well as expand my knowledge of social psychology.
This picture is an example of availability heuristic. I learned that the availability heuristic is when an individual makes a decision based on recent events that have happened that reminds them of their decision. In this picture, the man decides that he doesn’t want to go on a plane because of a recent story about a plane crash. Because he saw this, he believes that the same thing will happen to him if he has to go on a plane.

I am the type of student that will only put in effort in something that I have interest. It is hard for me to sit down and concentrate on something that I don’t find interest in. For example, I could work on math or science for hours but I’m not able to sit down for more than 10 minutes when it comes to English or history. My ability to grow with effort is the highest because I as long as it’s something I’m interested, I can learn a lot.

Music is a big part of my life. It has helped me through rough times as well as help me become close to my boyfriend. When me and my boyfriend first met, music was one of the things we always talked about. He would send me songs of the day, make me playlists, and was always showing me new songs when we were together. Even after a year and a half, our relationship still revolves around our love for music. Because we are in a long distance relationship, music is what I turn to when I miss him. While I share music taste with him, none of my friends listen to the same genre of music I do, so when I’m with them, my mood is always different than when I used to listen to music with my boyfriend.
Examples of songs that remind me of my boyfriend include; Don’t Forget Me by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Change Your Mind by the Killers, Something in the Way by Nirvana, Andy You’re a Star by the Killers, Garden Grove by Sublime, and By The Way by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. On the other hand, with my friends I listen to more popular music.
This is a picture of one of our favorite albums to listen to together.

Throughout the first unit, I did not space out my note taking well enough. I found myself cramming in the notes while completing the review sheet. I feel like if I had spread out taking the notes, I wouldn’t have felt so stressed the week of the exam. I mainly prepared for the exam by looking over my notes and completing the review sheet. This method tends to work for me because I get to review the material while applying it. Reviewing over test one and writing down all the correct answers will help me with the next exam because I learned that I know the material, but I just need to slow down while taking the test.
I chose this picture because it discusses some of the habits I want to incorporate for my next exam. For example, it suggests that you take your time and plan ahead while studying. I feel that next time I need to take more time preparing as well as taking the exam. It also suggests that you should study for 50 minutes and take a break for 10. I want to start incorporating this into my study routine because I never take breaks while I study and end up getting overwhelmed with what I’m trying to review.

Picture A would be considered a credible source because they have the “4 out of 5 Dentist” part of it. This establishes credibility within their ad because it shows that even dentist think that Crest is the best toothpaste option. Picture B would be considered a non credible source because they do not state why that person lost all of that weight. They just say it to make you think you’ll loose a large amount of weight like them, but in reality not every diet plan works on everyone. Picture C is an example of an attractive source because it is showing a celebrity using their product. This makes their brand more attractive to potential buyers because more people will want to buy their products if a celebrity uses them too.

After watching the video, I realized that advertisements still use some of the same techniques that they did, even in a society that is trying to promote diversity. As times have changed, people have began to promote diversity of people’s skin colors and weight, but still don’t always allow older people to be in commercials. Ads still send people the message that you should stay young, beautiful, and skinny, but in order to do that, you must buy their products. Growing up, I always wanted to be one of those thin, flawless women without even realizing that the idea was coming to me from commercials. I also believe that the women were the ones who did all the housework and took care of the children, even thought I was raised in a single mother household.
All these images show an objectifying of women. They all show that women need to be pretty and thin. The milk, victoria’s secret, and two of the beer ads display women as sexual objects in order to sell their product. The other beer ad makes people assume that women belong in the kitchen and even there they always manage to mess things up.

Emotional intelligence is described as the way we monitor both our own and others’ emotions and how we deal with those emotions. Self Regulation is related to that because it is how we deal with our emotions during a panicked state. To me, emotional intelligence is how I deal with the emotions I feel. I have always been a very emotional person and I’ve always struggled to contain those emotions. But, as I’ve gotten older I have tried to learn how to deal with those emotions in an appropriate way. The one emotion I have always struggled to deal with was my anger and anxiety. This video was helpful for me because it showed me different methods I could use to help calm those emotions when I do feel them.
This picture is an example of some of the techniques recommended in the video. Calming techniques include deep breathing for 5 to 8 seconds. A sensory support technique from the video is the body scan. This is when you focus your breathing into each part of your body. Finally, thinking strategies from the video include thinking about what the other person was feeling during the situation.

While reading the article, I was surprised to learn about the different ways men and women convince a partner to have sex. It was interesting to learn that majority of men fake emotion involvement in order to gain sexual relationships, but women try and show sexual interest as a way to gain emotional attachment. I was also surprised to learn that it is more likely for men to stalk their ex in hopes of convincing them to get back together with them. These are all examples of what men and women do that upset the other one.
The picture above is one of the examples of how men can upset women. It is proven that men are more likely to stalk their recent ex in order to find a way to convince them to get back together.

When looking back on my ePortfolios, the three topics that stood out to me were the one covered in blogs five, six, and eight. I have learned about the topics in blogs five and six, but I learned even more about them during this course. Blog eight stood out to me because it was on something that I never learned about. I enjoyed learning about the different things that people do that anger their partners before, during, and after the relationship. The topics in blogs five and six have been discussed in previous English and psychology classes. We learned in English what makes a source credible or not. For the topic in blog six, I learned previously in a psychology class how advertisers use certain types of people because it is more pleasing to the eye.
This picture is an example of what I related the topic of blog five to. I used my knowledge of ethos, pathos, and logos to help me find credible and non credible sources.
Weekly Blog 10
When first starting this course, I was hoping to learn about the psychology behind different human behaviors. I believe that throughout this course, I have learned different factors that go into how people behave in certain situations. For example, I learned about the different methods that advertisers use that convince people to buy their products. I also learned about different dynamics in relationships and what works and what doesn’t work. This course has definitely taught me more about psychology and made my love for it grow. During this course, my organization skills definitely improved because I had to know what was due and when I had time to do it. If I had to take this course again, I would want to start my assignments sooner than I did this semester. I believe that if I had spread it out over a few days, I would have completed the assignments more successfully.
