Hello. My name is Cheyenna Dennison. Music has always been a huge part of my life.My grandfather was a musician, my mother a cellist and sang in choir in high school. I am even related to one of the Beatles. George Harrison, in case you were wondering. I have always enjoyed music and singing. I was in chorus in elementary school, and I returned during my junior year of high school.
However, my home life was not the best. Music became my escape, my outlet. It became my home away from home. I enjoyed school and being able to sing every day. To have music to rehearse and eventually perform was always something I looked forward to. Not to mention my choir director being so supportive and a person to confide in when needed. She made high school so much easier and gave me confidence in my abilities as a singer.
She inspired me to want to do the same. This was my original plan, but I chose my fallback of special education. After realizing I still really wanted to do music and become a music teacher, here I am writing this essay. I hope to be the same person she was for me. To enrich future children’s lives with music and culture, give them something to enjoy and be proud of. To be the reason kids love going to school and give them the desire to create beautiful music and unify students regardless of differences.
If I can pass my love for music on to my future students, and have a positive influence on their lives, I will consider myself happy, fulfilled, and successful. My professional aspiration is simple. It is to become a chorus teacher and be a safe space for children to hone their craft and discover a love for music much like I did.
That’s what music did for me and I would like to be able to do the same for others. Thank you for your time.
