During my initial 100 hours of interning at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare Inc., I provided on-the-job support for mobile clinics and community outreach at multiple points in Chesapeake, Suffolk, Norfolk, and Portsmouth. The mobile clinic was run by Nurse Practitioner Tanyell, who oversaw my work, and I experienced some of the responsibilities that give a small sense of how healthcare is delivered outside of the hospital and other clinical environments. A majority of my time was directed to assisting in the mobile clinic, where I did vitals, completed paperwork, and engagement with patients by providing assistance tailored to their specific health and support needs.
I also facilitated various community events, such as safety and health fairs, wellness pop-ups for seniors, and resource handouts for children and families. With these experiences, working with different stakeholders of diverse backgrounds allowed me to better comprehend various challenges faced by them in order to access care. Apart from the community service, I was also involved in professional development activities alongside the other interns, such as networking events and group reflections on our internship experiences. These exercises helped me acquire communication skills, observe various leadership styles, and understand the importance of teamwork in healthcare.
Overall, these 100 initial hours have reinforced my interest in healthcare administration. I have seen dear value for outreach to the community, mobile health-care configurations, and coordinating efforts to close into disparities. I look forward to persisting with this internship whilst building on the skills and insight sets I’ve encountered with a clear path towards my future plans.
