SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Instructions

Exploring Culture

We often had cultural research done as part of our homework in class. Every now and then it was also included into our classwork as well. Most of the time, it was just comparing what the countries we were researching did differently than us here in America. Throughout that process, I was able to learn the many different things done in countries and how unique they are.

As someone of Hispanic heritage, it was nice to gain a little insight to what others did around the world. It not only helped me see what they do in a different way, I can also look at my life and theirs and see the common similarities between the two. But the main takeaway that I got from this research is that Hispanics based countries are very proud in their culture and are very hard workers. They are also kind to most people and in some of those countries, treat them like extended family.

Engaging in Communities

Currently in this modern day, it is a bit hard to be involved in a community due to the pandemic of COVID going around. The fear of it spreading does not make it any easier either. Although this is still an issue, it is important to stay engaged in the communities you are in. I believe that in these trying times, it is key to stay social if possible. Thanks to the internet, it could not have been any easier to communicate with those in your groups across the country or world in the case that you cannot meet together in person.

I personally am not an outside, or people person. I am an introvert. But just because I am, does not mean I don’t try to be social online. I tend to talk with my close friend group and when I am playing my online video games, I try to be social during those gaming sessions as well. Since I am mainly online, I do not really have photos or videos to show here, I do have a YouTube video that has me talking at separate moments throughout. Interpersonal Communication

The two online websites that we used throughout the course were the discussion board on black board and Lingrohub. Not to mention the in-class discussions as well. For the discussion board, we really just review each other’s work. But for lingro, we had to constantly be in a in class discussion between classmates in order to get answers for our assignments. For the most part throughout the entire course, we knew when we were going to have to talk to each other. I personally, did not do well with the person-on-person discussions between classmates in order to get our work done.

While it was very difficult, I do believe that I slowly got better at it as time went on. But in the end, it was still a strugle and I believe that I did not improve as much as I had hoped. But I did tend to do much better whenever I was working alone and by myself. I have always believed that I worked better alone. But I will attempt be better at talking to others when it comes to group assignments.

Presentational Speaking

One of the projects I had to do involved me talking about my favorite places on campus and where I lived. I chose the library, the Webb center, and my room since I did not feel like showing my entire house was necessary. Along with that, I also had interviews with my professor towards the end of the semester.

Presentational Writing

My class did not do any pamphlets or article writings throughout our class time. Most of the writing that we did was for class examples and assignments.

Interpretive Listening

Throughout the course, we often had online homework that involved listening to a pre-recorded message in Spanish. We would either have to translate it to English or figure out what the words meant. And in some cases, we had to indicate what picture they went to with vague descriptions.

From my memory, we had to listen to audio recordings that made us spell out the words, describe a picture, choose the picture the audio was describing, or respond to the audio that was playing in full sentences. Sometimes they just needed a single word response. I felt like the most challenging part for me was the responding part of the audio assignments. While I was able to make it through, I personally did not make any progress in getting better at the task. But I did like the spelling out word portion. That part also made me learn that sometimes the words are not spelled at all how they sound.

Interpretive Reading

During class, we often read out our answers to the questions. Besides that, we never read out much. Most of the work done was either partner work, or the work done by ourselves.
