As an upcoming nursing student, I wanted to have a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of being nurse. So, I interviewed Shiann Corchan. She is a Neonatal ICU Nurse at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD). She as well attended Old Dominion University and received her Bachelor’s of Science and Nursing. Shiann also received her Basic Life Support certification. During the interview we touch on topics such as “what path did you take?” and “daily life in the hospital.” I found that Shiann’s pathway to becoming a nurse is very similar to the pathway I’m taking now. Shiann started as a regular undergraduate majoring in nursing at ODU. Then she continued her education at ODU school of nursing for two years. The most important question I asked Shiann was the roles and responsibilities of being a nurse. Shiann being a neonatal nurse working with babies her responsibilities differ. Shiann informed me that her priority is to make sure the babies are comfortable and keeping the family comfortable as well. Towards the end of the interview Shiann gave me great advice and my takeaway is “don’t be too hard on yourself and do this because you want to do it.”
