SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

The practices that helped me understand cultural perspectives was watching youtube videos about the spainsh and latin culture. Watching those videos help me understand why spainish speaking people act how they act and live the way they live. Through these short videos I was able to look through the eyes of people across the world.

The youtube videos that where provided throughout the course about the encourged me to read more into the people of Spain and Latin countries. An example would be the culture video about how spainish citizens precive soccer tournaments in their country and how intense it can get. At first, I believed that only in the United States people had strong feelings when it came to sports but when watching the video I saw that there are other countrires with the same energy. It really helped me realized that Americans are not as wild and extra as we are looked as and that people are just like us.

Engaging in Communities

In English, give a brief description of the value of, and importance of, engaging in your immediate community and the global community.

Although I have not done a lot that I can recall of me engaging in my immediate community or global community, I know how important it is. Helping your community is a core value that everyone should have. You could fight for change, clean the ecosystems, and help others in need. It is good to give back and use your positions to better others in need.

My friend and I Protesting for The Black Lives Matter movement.

Interpersonal Communication

TalkAbroad and the discussion board, are very good activites to do if you would are interested in learing a second language. Also the VHL activites that are made to listen and respond to is a very useful tools. The discussion boards forces the student to think about their culture and respond to the question in spanish and the VHL activites makes students be able to understand spainish more effortlessly by hearing.

These disscussion board where vital to my understanding of spainish. In my opinion you must learn about a group of people before you continue to learn abaout their language. The disscussion boards helped me learn how to write in spanish more effectively and VHL helped me comprehend what I was learning. Even though the VHL activites where the most time consuming and sometimes very confusing, it helped me add more hard to my learning. What I would do differently next time for these assignments is take my time with them so I could understand the materials even more then I did this semester.

Presentational Speaking

In spanish 101 we did speaking quizzes either with the instructor, or with a classmate. The speaking quizzes with classmate was not very helpful because there was no way you would get any feedback. I feel as if those speaking quizzes could have been more structured. But the quizzes that where with the teacher where really helpful to learn more about the language and helped me make progress. I do not have recordings of these because I was not instructed by my knowledge to do so.

I had four speaking quizzes throughout the semester. The first was in was with my instructor was extrememly helpful and reminded me to study on my spainsh. The second and third where not as helpful and did not benefit me in my journey to learing spanish. The last one was for the final I believe that I showed all my progress throughout the semester and how far I’ve come. I believe that throughout the speaking presentations in the semester I exceled at wording my sentences correctly and next time I will I think I will slow down because speaking in spanish always made me nerves.

Presentational Writing

For presentational writing in spanish 101 we only did discussion boards about the culture of spanish speaking countries. We learned how they interact, how they addresss people and even about their passion for sports. In the disscussion boards we where told to give our opinion of what we think about their culture and then compare it to the culture in the United States.

The discussion boards helped me see others opinions and also learn how to describes things better in spainsh. In the disscussion boards for most of them, the task is to write your opinion of the spainsh culture in english; then write you personal experience in spanish. It was also good to see others experiences and opinions and be able to comment on them as well. I feel that it brought the class together in a way despite us being online for this course. Also, I excelled in writing sentences in spanish and there is nothing that I would change about the disscussion boards.

Interpretive Listening

Interpretive Listening activites that I have completed this semeter where the listening modules on VHL and the listening questions for the exams. The listening modules consisted of a audio of about 45 seconds and below where questions about the audio. And the same was for the listening exam questions.

The listening audios that I heard this semester had conversations like, how many memebers a person has in their family, how old someone was, what someone did throughout their day and, letters to friends. Theses brought interest to me because I got to listen how someone fluent in spainsh would speak and have conversations with another spanish speaking person. It taught me how to better pronounce vocabulary I had to learn and helped me prepare for speaking quizzes. Below is an imageof one of the VHL assignments I had to complete because I am not able to upload the recording file.

Interpretive Reading

In spanish 101 this semester we had to read in the text book about the spainsh culture. We would read about it and then be questioned on the text we read through the VHL modules that where almost on a daily basis. Below is a picture of a text in the textbook I had to read concerning family and names

The unclear part of these reading for me was the simple fact that their culture is so different from ours. At times it would take me some time to fully understand what the text is trying to say and why it was that the people of spanish speaking countries did things the way they did. But overall the information I took from these readings helped me understand mre about the world and to keep an open mind when it comes to other people in the world.
