Cybersecurity has a significant role in many disciplines, such as Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Philosophy, Political Science and more. For this reason, it is considered an interdisciplinary field of study due to its increasing relevance in today’s age. I am interested in Cybersecurity technology because, as technology continuously advances with each generation, it is important to learn about how the plethora of information that exists through technology is protected to avoid a potential breach in privacy or cyberattacks from occurring. It needs to be safeguarded so that said information can continue to be held safely to ensure that no data or sensitive documents are at risk for getting lost or stolen, while also maintaining the regulation of the interactions between human and machine. Although I am interested in pursuing a profession in the medical field, I am aware of how important it is to ensure that information, such as medical data and patients’ records, kept on technological devices are kept safe and secure to maintain the privacy of the patients, otherwise this could lead to a decline in the quality of clinical healthcare due to the patients’ data becoming vulnerable to hackers who could steal that information and use it for other fraudulent activities. A cyberattack may also cause medical data and devices to become inaccessible to healthcare providers, leading to poorer care of patients and higher mortality rates. This could lead to the reputations of health organizations or hospitals to also decline as it would pose violations of the HIPPA privacy rules and possibly be faced with fines or even sued. Thus, I chose to take this course at ODU among other courses that were offered in hopes to learn more about how beneficial and crucial Cybersecurity is in our society today as our dependence on technology increases.
