Ethical Considerations in Technology Development

In the paper, Technology and Responsibility: Reflections on the New Tasks of Ethics, the sentence, “The short arm of human power did not call for a long arm of predictive knowledge,” means that we should not overreach the development of something we don’t fully understand as it can lead to an unethical or invasive product. i.e., the possible consequences of new technology should be fully considered before releasing it to the public. Specifically to cybersecurity-related technology, many of the tools and programs we already have are very powerful and can be used as forces for both good and evil purposes. I think the underlying point made by the Jones article, is that we should not become too reliant on technology as we cannot see what the possible implications of it may be in the future.

Regarding developments in cyber technology, I think privacy concerns are the biggest ethical issue. Due to the internet, mobile phones, and Big Data collection, it is important to realize that everything is significantly less private than when the Jones article was written in 1973.
