- How does your major relate to cybersecurity technology?
- Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.
My major is Cybersecurity, I am currently a junior at Old Dominion University majoring in this exciting career of Cybersecurity. Cybersecurity’s a significant impact on our society to know and learn this major. Cybersecurity technology is known as information technology security, and Cybersecurity is a fundamental element of any company’s data security plans. Although used interchangeably, there are variances between how these terms are defined and what they involve. Information technology security (IT) mentions protecting data and information systems from unauthorized access and users. It consists of implementing processes that prevent the misuse, modification, or theft of sensitive company information.
On the contrary, Cybersecurity covers data protection from the internet from hackers and other cybercriminals. Cybersecurity is a subdivision of information technology security. In the meantime, cybersecurity deals with protecting data from internet hackers and cybercrimes, and information technology security is the main component and process that covers how company data is dealt with day-to-day. However, you will need to develop effective risk management plans for both information technology and Cybersecurity so your company can withhold any resilience; it is also one of the best ways of not losing data or online threats.
In the end, both roles of cybersecurity technology and Cybersecurity will always overlap; both functions have the end goals of protecting sensitive information and data through a compound of technologies and physical processes. However, essential differences apply to how each data security process is carried out.

Information Security Analysts: Info Sec Analyst is different from a Cyber Security Analyst; both roles secure data. They work alike, like going against malicious users and other outside threats. InfoSec is a larger area of data security and a larger field; their goal is to protect against any computer-related crime. For example, they monitor any trace of invasion or improper access of data. They carefully monitor sensitive data. Cyber Security focuses on protecting data from cyber-related crimes.
Network and Computer Systems Administrators: so what do Network and Computer Systems administrators do? Well, they set up and configure systems and troubleshoot and repair computers. They also maintain both hardware and software and usually are always hands-on experiences with routers, switches, hubs, and other networking equipment. How do they help cybersecurity roles? Well, they keep networks and systems safe from cybercrime.
Computer Systems Analysts: Computer Analysts are responsible for analyzing, designing, and implementing computer systems, are expected to keep information systems operating running smoothly. They work together with computer programmers, software vendors, and information system analysts. So how do computer systems relate to Cybersecurity? Well, they ensure the company’s digital assets are protected from attackers.
Security Management Specialists: Performance security assessments for a firm and design security systems and processes. May concentrate on areas such as physical security or the safety of employees and facilities. They are also an organization’s strategic level of protecting resource information and complex and evolving threats.
