SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

Each unit with LingroLearning we learned about culture of Spanish speaking countries in different ways through the Exploración cultura.

I learned a lot about how people live in different countries. Whether it was what they do to stay in shape or what makes them happy. I also learned a lot about how the LGBTQ community is treated in different countries with some still prohibiting gay marriage. I also learned that women rights have been making somewhat slower progress in Spanish speaking countries but they are catching up to America.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in the local community is very important in creating a better future for everyone.

Whether going to events at ODU such as Mars Fest which is pictured above or just talking to people at work. Being able to use more languages and sharing that commonality with others builds a bond and allows for a broader reach. By speaking Spanish in the kitchen I am able to learn things about native Spanish speakers which they are unable to share with others affectively due to language barriers.

Interpersonal Communication

Throughout the semester I presented several projects including a powerpoint about my family and also used talk abroad for interpersonal communication.

The powerpoint about my family which can be downloaded from the link above includes an audio description of my family in spanish. I was also able to hold two 15 minute conversations on TalkAbroad which were with native Spanish speakers. We talked about our families, activities we like, food we like, and what we do for a living.

Presentational Speaking

In this video I presented how to make pancakes entirely in Spanish.

Throughout each of the presentations I had to give the hardest part was manipulating my phrases into words I knew in Spanish. Instead of trying to use one long word which I didn’t necessarily know I would switch it into a few smaller words which I knew.

Presentational Writing

In this project I made an advertisement for a fictitious golf club at ODU in Spanish.

Other than this advertisement I also made a pamphlet on how to help with anxiety. Both of these projects were hard but are useful to know. I now know I am able to get information out affectively to multiple language groups.

Interpretive Listening

In class we would sometimes listen to spanish speaking and then have to write down what we thought we heard. We also had to do similar activities in LingroLearning where we would listen to words and have to tell the conjugation.

I struggled the most with telling the difference between B and V and also telling which vowels were being used. It was also hard for me to understand stem changing words as I would often think they were a completely different word entirely. Spanish speakers also talk very fast which can make it hard to follow some things being said but when they speak slow I can understand a lot.

Interpretive Reading

There were several reading exercises we did such as reading a passage and picking out certain verbs. We also did reading activities to get context clues for how to conjugate and which words to use.

Although it seemed like a lot of reading I was able to understand a lot of the words by using context clues. As the class went on I only got better at understanding sentences and passages. Although I don’t understand every word I can get a general sense of what is being discussed.
