NASA Pathways Program
As a computer engineering trainee, I am closely integrated with the data systems group at the NASA Langley Research Center. NASA is a world leading innovator in space exploration, technology, and scientific research. Consequently, they need the people with diverse backgrounds in science, technology, teamwork, and more.
Job Description
Because of my extensive nuclear background, my role involved integrating with the current operations teams and sharing my industry experience in the hopes of identifying areas that could be improved. I performed extensive research on the current state of operational technology and created reports and examples of possible future implementations for NASA’s consideration. These research areas were in:
- Improved software configuration
- Advanced MATLAB development
- Streamlined software development environments and workflows
Impact
- Presented findings to panel of experts and engineers
- Demonstrated prototype applications utilizing recommended strategies
- Spurred training and kickoff of new projects to transition to proposed processes
- My internship has turned into full time long term employment with NASA.
Expectations
As a non-traditional student with years of work and military experience, stepping into the internship role was unique. I was familiar with organizational structures, business processes, and team work, but I had never worked with such a prestigious institution.
Reflection
The most powerful moment for me was when I realized I was in a research role. Instead of being heavily focused on production with a sense of urgency, I had the chance to reflect on my experience and make improvements in my processes. At the same time I was able to compare my industry experience to a new environment and make comparisons. It was certainly a challenge to adapt to this new mindset. As a new person and outsider it was stressful and exciting to present my ideas for scrutiny.
Skills Developed
- Advanced software development practices
- version control
- configuration management
- Advanced MATLAB programming
Advice to Future Pathways Interns
Don’t be afraid to asks questions or walk into somebody’s office to ask about what they do. NASA employees love sharing what they do and you will learn about some of the advanced and novel science and technology. Not to mention that you will build a network of problem solvers who can help with professional and education advice.
Career Connections
Having secured full time employment with NASA, I wouldn’t do anything different. As a child I dreamed of working for NASA, but never thought it would be a reality. My major is computer engineering, and I can say without a doubt, this is the ideal career for me and I foresee myself retiring from this job.
