Engineers are part of the core development of cyber networks. Engineers help design these systems. At the design side of a cyber network, an engineer works to design the safety and security features of the systems. This allows the system to be properly put together and gives it the best chance of being secure. Engineers can also act as penetration testers. Penetration testers purposefully try to infiltrate a computer network and note what vulnerabilities they discover. These notes are then used to reengineer the systems to be safer and more secure. This allows for systems to constantly evolve and become stronger and stronger. Engineers act as the main workforce against cyber attacks and therefore cover most of the jobs. Engineers can conduct maintenance on the cyber networks. They must keep track of their systems and maintain the operations of those systems. They are also responsible for scanning these systems for vulnerabilities and possible attacks. This allows them to verify the stability and reliability of their systems. This again allows them to evolve their systems. At the highest level, engineers can develop the standards behind the cyber protections for a system and apply those to other systems. These standards can extend all the way to the top with organizations like the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The NIST provides standards for all sorts of technology applications but in cybersecurity specifically they provide many industry standards. This is important to create a common ground within the industry which leads to overall safer networks. These standards are taken from the top engineers in the industries. Engineers are not only important to the development and maintenance of cyber networks, but they are essential to all operations of cyber networks. A good team of cyber engineers will lead to the safest cyber network possible.
