Developing an in-house cybersecurity program is often not the best choice for businesses. For many small businesses it is just not valuable to have an entire department or program based around cybersecurity. The cost for such a program or department can run well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars or even into millions depending on the size. Hiring full time employees that are skilled in cybersecurity applications can be extremely expensive. Generally, for small businesses it is recommended to hire contracted services. These services can offer several benefits. They are low cost commitments relative to a full time staff, but are not wholly dedicated to the single business applications. Developing a cybersecurity program in-house can be a very helpful business decision for large businesses. Most large businesses inevitably have a large amount of technology wrapped into their daily operations. With this comes a need for cybersecurity applications. With such large systems, it is essential for a business to have a dedicated staff to maintain the security. A dedicated staff allows for non-stop monitoring of these systems and can allow for a more reliable system. Contracted services are not usually capable of constant monitoring due to their client volume. Even though it is more expensive for businesses to invest in a cybersecurity program, it could potentially be exponentially more expensive in the event of a security breach. For the majority of businesses, this is just not a large priority. Many businesses do not completely rely on computer systems to operate and therefore cybersecurity does not impact their business as much. A cybersecurity program is excessive in many cases but it is always important to evaluate the risks and needs of your business.
